Hotbels BTU Award

The BTU (Business & Technology United) Award was established by the Hotbels Seminar committee in order to recognize key contributors to Hotbels and to the glass industry. The award was first presented in 2007 and is now presented each year. Recipients to date include the following.

2017: David BootheAs Hotbels recognizes the exemplary contributions not only to the Hotbels conference, but to the entire glass industry with our BTU Award, this year we recognize Mr. David Boothe of Allstates Refractory Contractors for his efforts and participation at Hotbels as well the ideas and discussions he initiates to improve our industry.

2016:  Roberto Cabrera.  Roberto has been involved at Hotbels, both as participant and keynote speaker, for several years.  His knowledge and experience in the glass industry are undisputed; it is with great pleasure and respect that we present Roberto with the 2016 BTU Award.

2015: George Kopser.   Hotwork was founded in 1965 by George's cousin, Bob Burger. As a 19 year old in 1966, George Kopser joined the start-up company in order to assist his cousin.  George was personally involved in the application of this new technology - initially as a burner operator; but he quickly was promoted.  In the early years, George held various management positions for the company including responsibility for the aluminum and steel industries and also in the division involved in manufacturing burner systems.  George spent the next 30 years of his career involved in the glass industry as Hotwork's VP and Glass Industry Manager.  George was intricately involved in the expansion of services to the glass industry to include glass draining, cullet filling, sulphate burnouts, expansion control supervision and crown rise monitoring.  George participated in the Hotwork seminar from it's inception and was co-host with Bob Chambers once it became Hotbels.  He was also a regular participant/presenter at the Glass Problems Conference.  George participated in, and was nominated, to chair the Phoenix Award Committee to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the glass industry.  After an amazing 48.5 year career at Hotwork, George retired in the summer of 2014.  The joint organizers of the Hotbels Conference chose to recognize George with the 2015 BTU Award to celebrate his leadership and contribution to both the glass industry and to the Hotbels Conference.

2014: Verallia Group, Verallia Group was chosen to receive the 2014 Hotbels BTU Award for their contributions to the glass industry and also to Hotbels, where they have authored and delivered many presentations and panel discussions that included topics such as “Crown Overcoat Applications” to the development of “Oxy/Gas firing” over 29 years. The 2014 Verallia Group BTU recipients included William Benz, St. Gobain, John Eaton St. Gobain, Sid Tripathi, Verallia, Beuther Schmidt, Anchor Hocking, Robert Utsler, Kerr, Robert Dreyfus, Metro, Gordon Hughes, Ball, Doug Legel, Ardagh, Ernie Peters Ardagh, and Heidi Liebi Root, Ardagh.

2013: Matthew Wheeler, Technical Marketing Manager, RHI US Ltd., for his substantial contributions to the glass industry, particularly in the areas of technical solutions, and also to Hotbels, where he has authored and delivered numerous presentations over the years.

2012: Kevin Lievre, Global Glass Segment Manager, Air Products, for his substantial contributions to the glass industry, particularly in the areas of development and application of technologies, and also to Hotbels, where he has authored and delivered numerous presentations over the years.

2011: Michele Blackburn, with more than 21 years at Saint-Gobain SEFPRO, she has made significant contributions to the glass industry and also to Hotbels, where she has authored and delivered many presentations over the years, as well as provided several suggestions for keynote speakers.

2010: John T. Brown, currently Technical Director for the GMIC, and a 40 year tenure at Corning. John was chosen to receive the 2010 BTU for his many contributions to the glass industry and also to Hotbels.

2009: Dr. Douglas H. Davis, Senior Glass Technologist for Toledo Engineering Company (TECO), for his significant contributions in many areas of the glass industry as well as Hotbels, where he has authored and delivered numerous informative presentations over the years.

2008: Michael A. Nelson, who was integral in advancing refractory technology for the glass industry during his more than 35 years of service with Corhart Refractories, as well as being a key contributor to many Hotbels seminars.

2007: C. Philip Ross, President of Glass Industry Consulting International, for his contributions to the glass industry and in particular his valuable input in the development of and ongoing participation in Hotbels.Hotbels BTU Award Recipients
